It can be dangerous using walkie talkies in explosive areas

Taking a look at the above image and you might be forgiven for thinking that something like a bakery is pretty much a safe place? Sadly, that is not the situation and if there is 'flour' in the air it creates a perfect precursor to a devastating explosion if you use the wrong walkie talkie. It could actually kill many people. And there are, as well as the obvious situations like gas, oil and other flammable working environments other less obvious to many as the example of the bakery shown above.

It can be one of those easily overlooked risks with devastating results. But there is an answer for any of these types of situations. Basically you have to use ATEX walkie talkie 2 way radios that CANNOT create explosions. These special ATEX radios come in different standards and below is a breakdown of the ATEX information:

atex-standards

As you can see, the standard can be rather complex, and its important that the right ATEX walkie talkie is used that has the exact correct specification for the application - there are a number of different devices available. We have supplied ATEX standard
2 way radios since about 2008 and have experience to be able to advise customers on their needs if they need that advice. The whole standard covers nearly every type of dangerous environments that you could work in but ensuring the equipment is correct is vital.

There are different specifications and situations that will need different equipment - here are a few examples, but there are far more:

  • Underground use is Group 1 and above ground is Group II
  • Type G is tested for gasses and type D is tested for dusts (like in the bakery example we gave above)
  • EEx ensures that equipment is harmonized with European equipment.
  • The CPC mark D ensures EX51008 flame prof device
  • Temperature classifications are: T1 is 450C, T2 is 300C, T3 is 200C, T4 is 135C, T5 is 100C and T6 is 85C
  • T Amb is the ambient temperature when in use between -20C and +40C
